Can’t afford to buy your own castle? Not many can, but that doesn’t mean you can’t spend the night in one and even pretend like you live there. Europe is home to a multitude of magnificent castles that have been transformed into magical hotels like these.
1. Ashford Castle, Cong, Ireland
This County Mayo castle is one of the world’s finest, built nearly eight centuries ago and transformed into a luxury hotel in the 1930s, shortly after Ernest Guinness sold the estate to the Irish government. It sits across a sprawling, 350-acre estate overlooking the sparkling blue waters of Lough Corrib, surrounded by lush forest. The 80+ rooms and suites include elegant amenities like claw foot tubs and four-poster beds, as well as many of the original features. Over the decades, the castle has hosted many of the rich and famous, including Brad Pitt, Ronald Regan, Princess Grace, Mary Queen of Scots, and author Oscar Wilde.
